Top 3 cities to enjoy with a Mediterranean cruise next year

If you love nothing better than enjoying relaxing cruise holidays, why not consider a trip to the Mediterranean - a destination ideally suited to this kind of break?

Famous for its sunshine and beautiful views, this region is also home to some of the most incredible cities you will ever visit, making it an all the more appealing place to cruise to. Indeed, there are so many excellent places to stop off at that it can hard to decide which to particularly look out for on your itinerary. If you'd like to learn about three of the best, read on.

Dubrovnik - Croatia's ancient walled city

Among the most exciting destinations to visit on Mediterranean cruises is Dubrovnik. Nestled on the coast of Croatia, this charming city is famous for the vast walls that hem in its old town, with this medieval area being deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site.

In fact, the 13th century walls themselves are a strong draw to this charming location. Three metres thick in some places, they are also tall enough to offer excellent views from the top. So, ascending the stone stairs to look out over the surrounding area is certainly well worth doing.

The walls are not the city's only attraction. Strolling around the scenic old town, with its fascinating historic buildings and lovely little shops and restaurants, is another must-do. The Franciscan monastery is another great place to stop off at, being home to an excellent museum housing relics from both the church and a medieval pharmacy. What's more, outside you can admire the impressive Romanesque architecture of the cloister.

Heading to the beach or simply enjoying the town's chic and modern attractions, such as its restaurants and bars, are more excellent pastimes to indulge in before departing.

Discover the picturesque waterways of Venice

As one of Italy's most famous and unique cities, Venice also makes for a fantastic cruise destination. Best known for its incredible waterways that crisscross the city, it is home to some truly stunning architecture, and, of course, incredible works of art.

There is a huge range of things to do and see in the city, but one thing you mustn't miss out on while you're here is a trip on a gondola. These traditional Italian boats will take you along the picturesque canals - and the largest, the Grand Canal, is an undoubtedly spectacular choice for such a trip.

As you cruise down here, keep an eye out for the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute - a dramatic, beautiful church that sits picturesquely on the water's edge, its grand baroque design creating a shimmering reflection on the water.

Visiting the Piazza San Marco is also essential. It's in this bustling square that you will find St Mark's Basilica, which is perhaps the most famous church in Venice.

Other top things to do include visiting the gorgeous gothic palace the Palazzo Ducale, perusing one of the city's many art galleries or simply tasting the delicious gelato.

Gaze at amazing architecture in Valencia

Valencia in Spain is another fabulous Mediterranean cruise destination, offering a great mix of historic architecture, lovely restaurants and vibrant nightlife. While you're exploring the third largest city in Spain, make sure you visit the old quarter and see the Santa Catalina Church and Tower - a splendid gothic church, with a few baroque elements, that dates back to the Middle Ages.

It's also worth taking the time to visit the Mercado Central. Boasting fantastic modern architecture, this amazing sight is also one of Europe's largest, most exciting markets - and browsing the reams of stalls is a real experience.

Before you rush to book your idyllic Mediterranean break, make sure you take the time to look at the itineraries and deals offered by different providers, such as P&O Cruises, to ensure you get something that suits your tastes and budget.
