Celebrity Cruises was voted one of the World’s best cruise lines by Conde Nast Traveler. In a 2003 survey their readers deemed seven of the Celebrity ships to be among the top ten best large cruise ships. The company was created in 1989 and is dedicated to bringing its guests the very best in classic, elegant cruising and updating them to take account of today’s lifestyles.
Celebrity Cruises believes that the dining experience is an important element of any cruise and to this end the ships have custom-built galleys and all meals are prepared from the finest and freshest ingredients. Guests can choose from a variety of dining venues. The AquaSpa Café serves light and healthy meals whilst the main dining room, with its crystal glasses, beautiful china and gleaming silverware, offers award-winning cuisine, impeccable service and wonderful views of the ocean. Guests can also choose to have their meals in the comfort of their state-room or on their veranda. The specialty dining offers five-course meals that are not only delicious, but are also are prepared by your table. Celebrity Cruises is happy to meet a variety of dietary needs. Its ‘lean and light’ selection meets the standards recommended by the American Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society. There are also special children’s menus. Food can be prepared for those needing vegetarian, kosher, diabetic, low-fat, low-sodium, low-cholesterol, gluten-free or lactose-free diets.
Onboard activities on Celebrity Cruises range from spectacular Vegas-style shows to informative lectures. The Celebrity Discoveries Enrichment Programmes provide a wide range of programmes to suit all tastes and interests. All the lectures are delivered by experts in that particular area and cover topics ranging from finance and astronomy; to education, wine and politics, to history and culture. Speakers for these programmes have included respected people such as Rita Moreno and Ernest Borgnine. Other lectures highlight the history and culture of the cities the cruise will be sailing to. Guests can also take part in wine tasting events. For a nominal fee, the sommelier will guide guests through the various vintages. Celebrity holds art auctions at which original works from well-known artists are offered for sale. Critical commentaries are provided by scholars from Harvard, Yale and the National Gallery.
The Celebrity Cruise ships have onboard casinos where guests can try their hand at various games of chance and skill such as blackjack, poker, American roulette and slot machines. The theatre in the elegant showroom features a range of talented singers and dancers. The ship also has a range of onboard clubs and lounges including Michael’s Club which features a grand piano; the Martini Bar where guests can savour a range of drinks including martini and the Champagne Bar. For those wanting a more energetic evening the nightclubs provide music and dancing until the early hours of the morning.
On a quieter note the ships include a library where guests can read a novel and, on the Millennium-class ships, The Conservatory features creations by Emilio Robba, the famed Parisian silk flower designer.
The Celebrity Cruises AquaSpa offers an array of relaxing treatments and the fitness centre is equipped with all the latest fitness equipment. Guests can take advantage of the special classes or private instruction from professional fitness trainers. Also available is a Chinese treatment of acupuncture.
