Bar Harbor is an ideal town for travellers as it has a range of attractions to appeal to all tastes. This picturesque city was established in 1796, when it was known by the name Eden. Located on Maine’s Mount Desert Island, it receives a large number of visitors all year round. As it has the added draw of Acadia National Park as a neighbouring area, countless travellers who have a passion for camping also visit the town.

Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, which is located in Trenton, is the nearest airport to Bar Harbor and a free bus service operates between the two. Besides this, there are car rentals and taxis available. It takes about fifteen minutes to reach the city from the airport.

A few of the hot spots for tourists to see include Town Hill, Salisbury Cove and Hulls Cove. You’ll also find the College of the Atlantic, Jackson Laboratory and Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory. The major portion of the famous Acadia National Park is located in Bar Harbor, including the grand and beautiful Cadillac Mountain. You should also visit Maine’s only whale museum, The Bar Harbor Whale Museum and the Abbe Museum, which promotes Maine`s Native American culture by showcasing their history, crafts and archaeology.

Many visitors simply adore the camping opportunities that are available in the area. The Acadia Reserves give you a wonderful opportunity to take pleasure in the thrill of camping in North American forests. The amazing range of wildlife and nature is simply breathtaking. A number of options open to you, ranging from hotels, inns and rent cabins to camping on designated campgrounds, which truly allows you to bond with the natural environment.

The town offers a wide spectrum of restaurants to choose from. Besides the tasty seafood such as crab and lobster, you’ll also get to savour some of the finest American and French cuisine.

There are attractions for adventure lovers, like the Precipice Trail, which offers hikers a difficult, but exciting trail that has iron rungs and ladders to help overcome the steep climbs. Another spot, the Beehive, is a comparatively easier hike and it offers spectacular views of Bar Harbor’s Sand Beach, the Great Head, Frenchman`s Bay and Champlain Mountain. Alternatively, taking a leisurely walk on the Shore Path allows you to enjoy the pristine and rocky oceanfront.

Bar Harbor is famous for whale watching and nature lovers can also get close to porpoises and seabirds. The experience of being in close proximity to whales is unforgettable and there are number of companies available including The Bar Harbor Whale Watch Co., which will take you to the whale-watcher’s paradise of Frenchman`s Bay.

Among other attractions are The Bar Harbor Historical Society, which has a collection of rare artefacts and the soothing and relaxing park at Village Green, which is located in the heart of the city.

It’s a good idea to explore the town’s central area by foot, where you will discover a host of restaurants and shopping areas, especially on Main St. and Cottage St. Tourists can rent bicycles or take a ride on the Island Explorer buses, which are a great choice for travelling within the city.

Bar Harbor is the perfect place to visit. The town startles you with the contrasting beauties of the ocean and the forests, making your senses reel with awe and wonder.
