Cruises from Colon

If you are planning a trip to Panama you should consider visiting Colón. Economically the city has seen better times, but it is rich in history and culture. It is definitely a city worth visiting or holidaying in. It is the second largest city in Panama and it is the gateway to the Atlantic Ocean from the Panama Canal. It is a major asset for Panamanians because it is an important sea port for touristic and commercial use.

Colón is a beautiful port city where you can take walks in one of the many parks and boardwalks in order to view the sea and ocean. Many people enjoy going to Portobello, which is a small sight where you can find the ruins of five Spanish forts and a Spanish Colonial designed house. This house served as a gateway to take the gold extracted from Peru to Spain during the colonisation era. This is also one of the Panamanian spots protected by the UNESCO World Heritage.

A fascinating history museum is that of the Customs Building. It was originally used as a place where African Slaves had to pass through when entering the new world, and since then it has been converted into a museum which praises the African American community that has done so much to create a magnificent Panamanian society. Another Museum is the Black Christ Church and Museum which has an interesting display of clothing and pictures dedicate to Panama’s patron saint.

Another popular sight is the Fort San Lorenzo, which is admired by both tourists and locals. Magnificent views of the Chagres River and the Caribbean Sea make this spot well worth visiting. If you want to get a full view of Panama’s Colón City you should consider taking the Historic Panama Railroad which will guide you through many destinations that you may not have time to see individually on your trip. You will see the Gatun Lake, the Panama Canal and the rainforest. You may even get to see the wildlife that inhabits here.

Panama offers travellers many options; you can go on nature hikes to see Panama’s wildlife and plant life, or you can go bird watching. There are also tons of beaches to visit and relax on. When on the beach you could go swimming, surfing, scuba diving, yachting, snorkelling or take part in the many water sports on offer. There is also kayaking, river tubing and canopy tours. You can call one of the local agencies while you are there or ahead of time to book a special day trip to include all of these exciting activities.

Colón City is an amazing place to go year round. It is close to the equator making it beautiful throughout the year. It is a tropical destination so rain falls are also frequent. However, the weather is normally warm to hot all year round, so do not forget to bring your sun gear to protect you from the heat and powerful rays of light.
