Darwin, Australia is the capital of the Northern Territory. It has a population of over 114,000 and is the largest city in the region. The city is one of the most modern capitals in Australia, as a result of having been rebuilt twice in the last sixty years, firstly as a result of damage caused during World War II and secondly due to Cyclone Tracy, which struck in 1974. One of the city’s main industries is tourism.

The city’s tropical monsoon climate means that cyclones, thunderstorms and heavy rains can sometimes occur during the wet season, which runs between December and March. The winter, which is the dry season, is from April or May to October. The city’s cool months are June and July, when the temperature may drop to around 14°C.

Darwin has many beautiful beaches for you to visit. Mindil Beach is one of the main beaches and is conveniently located near to the casino. There is also Lammeroo Beach, which is stony, but does have a few ruins that may be worth exploring. Another favourite is Casaurina Beach, which is a nudist beach located 7kms east of the city.

For those who love culture, Darwin has many attractions that are worth a visit. The city holds many festivals, including the Darwin Festival, an annual event with music, dance, theatre, film, comedy and much more. The Seabreeze festival, which started in 2005, is perfect for families. Finally, there is Glenti, a festival that celebrates the city’s Greek community.

One of the city’s great attractions is the Darwin Symphony Orchestra, which holds a number of performances, by a variety of musicians, throughout the year. There is also the Darwin Entertainment Centre, which holds concerts and has two theatres; the first is a playhouse and the other a studio theatre. These attractions are perfect for those looking for an enjoyable evening out.

For a bit of history and some interesting sights, there is the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, where you can explore the history of the city and the Indo-Pacific Marine and Australian Pearling Exhibition, where you can see a variety of sea life in an aquarium.

For relaxation, Darwin has a variety of parks and gardens where you can enjoy a quiet stroll or explore the plants and wildlife. The Charles Darwin National Park is a popular attraction and offers a selection of interesting trails, including a mountain bike trail. It is also where the Earthdance festival is held. Other great parks include the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens and the Knuckey Lagoons Conservation Reserve.

You can also take tours to locations such as Litchfield National Park, Kakadu National Park and Nitmiluk National Park, (previously known as Katherine Gorge), during your stay in Darwin. These parks offer some fascinating sights and are definitely worth visiting.

There are numerous places to eat in the city, including restaurants, cafés and bars that offer live music.

There is no shortage of places to shop, including the popular Midil Sunset Markets, where you will find crafts and jewellery. There is also a selection of shopping areas on many streets around the city.

Darwin is perfect for those looking for a holiday that offers plenty of culture and history, along with some relaxing attractions to enjoy.
