Cruises from Edfu

Edfu is a lovely, small town in Egypt, situated along the river Nile. With a population of just 60,000 people, there are great wonders to be seen in this tiny town. Edfu is a popular tourist destination in Egypt both because of its location and for what it has in store for its visitors. It is located between the other popular tourist destination towns Esna and Aswan, making it the perfect sightseeing stop between locations.

So what are you going to find there? The Temple of Edfu, a Ptolemaic Temple, is located in this town. It was built out of sandstone blocks and has been preserved over the years. It was erected sometime between 237 BC and 57 BC, entering the ruling days of Cleopatra VII. Within the Temple of Edfu there are many statues; one of the statues you will find there is the perfectly preserved Statue of Horus.

In Edfu you will also find the remains of an unidentified Edfu Pyramid. Some people believe that this temple was built for King Huni, however this is not definite information. This small pyramid’s ruins are found along the Nile Valley in a spot called Naga el Goneima. This pyramid was constructed using red sandstone.

The temple of Apollinopolis is also located in Edfu. This pyramid has a special design with wings which are small openings so that the daylight can pass into the pyramid. The entire interior is decorated with hieroglyphics and it is thought to have been a sleeping quarters for the people of the clergy. This temple is also believed to be from the Ptolemaic period of around 181 BC.

Edfu is an ancient city and so you will be able to visit various museums around the town to learn a bit more about it. There is another temple located in Edfu which is the Temple Pylon. You can then visit the Tell Edfu which is an extremely old and interesting monument, outdating the Temple of Edfu. It actually outlines the progress that the city had made from its beginning which dates back over 3000 years.

The weather is beautiful in Edfu. However you must remember that there are no trees! This means that there is no shade from the scorching sun. Make sure you wear tons of sun block and keep yourself hydrated. You will want to be upbeat for a trip to one of these amazing spots in Edfu, but you will be unable to be if you are dehydrated and badly sun burned. Also remember that in the daytime Edfu can reach over one hundred degrees Fahrenheit but can drop dozens of degrees by the time the sun sets. Make sure you are properly clothed for both of these occasions. Bring along an extra set of warmer clothes if your excursion will be lasting into the night fall.

Edfu is a wonderful city to go to, with a rich history and exquisite temples and ruins. You should not skip this town on your Egyptian excursion.
