Fort Lauderdale is located in the middle of South Florida’s coast, halfway between Palm Beach and Miami, on the Atlantic Ocean. Besides being a costal city, Greater Fort Lauderdale includes over 30 municipalities and over 500,000 acres of Everglades. The city itself is home to 183,606 residents, but Greater Fort Lauderdale is home to approximately 1.8 million people. Fort Lauderdale is called the “Venice of America”, because of its canal system and is world-renowned for its golden sandy beaches, yachting and the Everglades.


The climate is tropical, with hot and humid summers and dry, warm, winters, with the lowest recorded temperature being mid-60 degrees Fahrenheit. In summer, which is both the wet season and the hurricane season, the average temperatures are 90 degree Fahrenheit.


For an educational experience, visit the many museums that feature a variety of topics, from fine art to swimming. The International Swimming Hall of Fame Museum and Aquatic Complex houses pools for diving, swimming and water aerobics. The swimming museum showcases Olympic memorabilia from many nations. The Museum of Science and Discovery features an IMAX theatre and over 200, hands-on, activities and is part of the Riverwalk Arts and Entertainment District.


Sun soaked beaches cover over 20 miles of Fort Lauderdale’s coastline. The non-profit Clean Beaches Council has designated several Greater Fort Lauderdale beaches, such as Hollywood Beach, Dania Beach, Deerfield Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach, as Blue Wave Beaches. They are known for being some of the cleanest, safest and most usable beaches in the United States. Hollywood features over two-miles of oceanfront boardwalk, Deerfield is home to powerboat races each summer and the village of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea offers snorkelling and diving along the reef. Inland, there are over 300 miles of waterways for yachts, gondolas and sailboats.


The sports enthusiast can rent a variety of water sport equipment, from wave runners to parasailing boats, catamarans to boogie boards and surfboards to kayaks. Several glass bottom boats will take you out snorkelling or fish watching.


Over 300 sports venues exist in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. The Jimmy Evert Tennis Center and Red Clay Court Facility offers year-round tennis and there are more than 40 golf courses, for all skill levels, in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area. Finally, Fort Lauderdale also plays host to many fishing tournaments.


Dine on the waterfront and eat fish fresh from the sea in Fort Lauderdale. In addition, bistros, steakhouses and ethnic restaurants offer a variety of dining experiences in the more than 4,000 eateries.


Shopping in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area offers many designer outlets at Sawgrass Mills, department stores and flea markets. On Las Olas Boulevard, boutiques, eateries and galleries make for intriguing shopping. Antique hunting is another favourite afternoon pastime for the adventurous shopper.


Fort Lauderdale is also home to Port Everglades where over 3,000 cruises leave for the Caribbean, Europe or other interesting places, annually. For convenience, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has over 600 flights a day.
