Cruises from Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe is made up of several islands known as an archipelago. They are located in the eastern portion of the Caribbean, to the south-east of Puerto Rico. Guadeloupe is an overseas territory of France that has a population of over 400,000 people. It is a part of the European Union and as a result uses the Euro as its currency which can help make travel to the area easier.

The two main islands that make up the archipelago of Guadeloupe are Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre. These two islands are very close to one another with only the Salt River lying between them. The three additional islands that make up Guadeloupe are known as La Désirade, Les Saintes, and Marie-Galante. Up until 2003, Saint Barthélemy and Saint Martin were a part of Guadeloupe as well but have since become their own individual overseas territories of France.

While the five islands are in close proximity to one another, each one is quite different from the other. The two large islands of Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre are opposites. Basse-Terre is full of mountains, including a sulphuric volcano, and is very green. Grande-Terre on the other hand is much flatter and provides some great beaches for its visitors.

The climate is tropical and varies little in its temperature during the course of the year. The colder months might see an average temperature of around 74 degrees Fahrenheit while the warmer months may be closer to 87 degrees Fahrenheit on average. Visitors should be aware that the rainy season occurs between July and November. It is possible that a hurricane could affect Guadeloupe although the most likely time for that to occur is during the month of September.

The sea around the islands that make up Guadeloupe is home to hundreds of beautiful tropical fish. Divers will have a variety of excellent areas to investigate and those that like to snorkel will have no problem finding great spots to check out. There are numerous glass bottomed boats that cruise around the waters in Guadeloupe as well so even if you can’t swim or prefer not to get wet you can still enjoy the wide variety of fish.

For a bit of adventure head to the Gosier where there are plenty of clubs where tourist party all night. Make sure you wear proper attire. The Pointe-a-Pitre is another popular area in Guadeloupe located on Grande-Terre. There are two popular museums in the area known as the Schoelcher Museum and the St. John Perse Museum. A Creole market place is also located in this part of town as well.

A trip to the Bas du Fort area on Grande-Terre will give tourists an opportunity to explore the fort. Nearby is an impressive aquarium that will give tourists a sampling of the tropical fish that can be found nearby. There are also places to eat and shop in the area as well to accommodate your needs.

On the Basse-Terre Island, tourists can enjoy some beautiful hikes through the lush jungle. There are hikes as short as a few minutes and as long as a few hours through the jungle. They will lead you to the impressive waterfalls on the island.
