Cruises from Guatemala
Guatemala is located in Central America, between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It shares borders with Mexico to the north and Belize to the northeast. Both Honduras and El Salvador share its southeast border. This is a mostly mountainous region, with a hot tropical climate. It has a rich and distinctive culture with strong Mayan and Spanish influences, though the cities have a predominantly European influence, mostly German.
Guatemala is a relatively small country and has varied topographical features. Most of the country is mountainous and volcanic in origin, but there are lush tropical rain forests in the north and fertile plains in the south and east. There are also many beautiful lakes and rivers.
The country is very much favoured by adventure travellers, because there are many activities to try, including hiking, biking, rafting and kayaking. There are also ruins to explore, volcanoes to hike and mountains to climb.
There are the fascinating streets of small unspoilt towns to wander, stopping along the way to take in the culture. You can shop for native crafts in the open-air markets or relax at a sidewalk café, sipping a cool drink in the heat of the afternoon.
A visit to the three dormant volcanoes in Guatemala’s Western Highlands should not be missed. The Lago de Atitlan region is very popular with tourists, especially since Lake Atitlan is considered to be one of the world’s most beautiful natural lakes. Ziplining is a popular activity in this area and you can get an amazing view of the water while flying down a zipline from high above. Swimming and kayaking in the lake, as well as hiking or biking the hills surrounding it, are a few more options. Taking in the culture of the lakeside towns is also a fascinating way to pass the day and a visit with the unique local deity, Maximon, is a truly unforgettable experience.
Visit Tikal, the Maya Biosphere Reserve, where you will see some of the most amazing Mayan ruins on the planet. This whole region is one of the largest protected land areas in Central America and located deep within the Peten jungle are the steep temples of the amazing Tikal structures rising high above the treetops. This Tikal complex, most specifically the grand plaza section, is believed to have already been in its early stages of construction at the time when Christ walked the Earth. There are believed to be many more remains than just the Takal complex lying, undiscovered, in the jungle of thick vines and trees that blanket this area.
Make some time to visit the local markets in the countryside of Guatemala. Also, take the opportunity to step into some of the local churches that make up the social fabric of this area. Guatemala is best known for its high quality textiles and the local countryside markets have a plentiful supply.
Guatemala provides for a unique tourist experience and is one not to be missed if you’re headed to Central America.
