Cruises from Kom Ombo

Taking a trip to the Nile River Valley area can be very pleasurable. There are a variety of places to explore, including numerous monuments, pyramids and temples. One such place that is worth visiting is a small city called Kom Ombo where a large pyramid temple was erected many years ago. This temple is the main reason why visitors come to this agriculturally rich town on the East bank of the river Nile.

You will find that Kom Ombo is a tranquil town with a population of no more than 60,000 people. The majority are Nubians who have been displaced. The most common job is farming since the major economic resources in Kom Ombo are corn and sugar cane. It is a quiet and safe town that welcomes foreigners to experience its glorious history.

In Kom Ombo there is an exquisite temple; the temple is actually a double temple and is dedicated to Sobek and Haroeris, and therefore carries their names - the Temple of Sobek and the Temple of Haroeris, although they are commonly referred to jointly as the Temple of Kom Ombo. Sobek was a God who was depicted with a crocodile head. His temple is said to be part of the Ptolemy VI ruling era, although earlier artefacts that were found at the sight may dispute this fact.

The temples underwent major reconstruction after an Earthquake hit the Nile region area in 1992. Although they were closed for some time they have been heavily and carefully worked on and have now been reopened for tourists to once again visit such amazing sights. One of the most interesting parts of the temple is an image of Cleopatra VII in the main temple along with various instruments used by medical doctors. Some instruments that were drawn on these walls include forceps, scalpels and a dilator. There is also a nilometer, which was used to measure the water level of the river Nile.

Like most other towns in Egypt, the weather is very hot, and during the day the temperature can soar to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, while dropping many degrees by the time the sun sets. This can be dangerous if people are not properly dressed. Sand storms are normally standard in this part of the world, so you should always be prepared just in case one should occur whilst you are out on your adventure. Your tour guide will be very helpful in regards to what you should bring. However, always remember to bring sun block, sun glasses and a hat because of the suns powerful and dangerous rays.

Kom Ombi is a very interesting place to stop by, especially if you use it as a midway point to Aswan due to their relatively close geographic locations. There may not be much more to do in Kom Ombi but this amazing dual temple, standing upon a sandy hill, is well worth the trip especially is you are an enthusiast of the Egyptian pyramids.
