Cruises from La Goulette

Lying on the coast of Tunisia is the port city of La Goulette, part of the port system of Tunis. Located at the end of Lake of Tunis’ causeway, the suburb is part of the capital city and can be reached by bus or car over the causeway. The city has a population of about 50,000 and the name means ‘river mouth’. Over the years it has been a strategic location and has been controlled by the Spanish and the Turks who were attempting to control the entrance to the harbour.

The city was the most important possession of Spain during the reign of Charles V. In 1574 it was taken over by the Turks, enlarged, and strengthened, using the existing Spanish fort to build up its defences. It was only during the French colonial period and occupation that the Lake silted over and could no longer take ships. A channel was dredged out across the lake between 1888 and 1892, returning shipping once again and the city grew more important as Tunis slowly declined.

Phosphates, mineral ores, and olives were exported from the area as machinery for the ferry service to Europe was brought in. There is little in the way of attractions in La Goulette except for the Spanish and Turkish fort and the gateway of the old Arsenal in the Tunis road. The city itself is peaceful and the Avenue Franklin Roosevelt is a pleasant walk in the summer time. The many restaurants and hotels are perfect for a long weekend getaway and the beaches are always full and attract numerous visitors.

Lying on the coast, people come to La Goulette to enjoy the scenery, beaches, and fine dining. It is known to have the best seafood restaurant in Tunisia and because the eateries are small, they can easily live up to that expectation. You can walk through the city, but the houses you will see in La Goulette are ordinary by any standard. The town centre is also very ordinary, but when you find the perfect restaurant, you will find something truly extraordinary!

If you are looking for a hopping nightlife, then you should cross the causeway into Tunis to enjoy the many different nightclubs and bars located there. Tunis also has many restaurants and types of accommodation, most of which go beyond the basic amenities you are likely to find in La Goulette.

Getting to La Goulette is easy as it is the second stop after Tunis on the local train line. There is only about 10 kilometres between the two stations and it doesn’t take long for the train to cover this distance.

If you are looking for a quiet getaway that is good for relaxing on the beach and simple walks through a quiet town, then visiting La Goulette is what you need. With its simple hotels and seafood restaurants, this town is the perfect destination for someone looking for a quiet place to meditate and simply enjoy the laid back atmosphere La Goulette has to offer.
