Cruises from Philae

In the river Nile there is an island of extreme fascination called Philae. It was revered by many as a sacred burial place of Osiris and was only accessible to priests. Overtime it got converted into a place of commerce and is now open as a significant tourist attraction. Philae has incredible architectural structures that range from the ancient Egyptians to the Roman occupation, and the entire island is covered with monuments dedicated to certain important people and their reign in the area.

The Temple of Hathor is the most ancient structure to be found on the island and it dates back to the era of the rule of Nectanebo, who ruled from 380 BCE to 362 BCE. Another set of ruins in the area are from the Ptolemaic times and include structures dedicated to Ptlemy Philadelphus, Ptolemy Epiphanes and Ptolemy Philometor.

The most popular sight to visit, however, is in the southern extremity of the island; the Propyla, which is two giant lions made out of granite in order to protect the two obelisks standing 44 feet tall. There were also several shrines built, such as the cage of the sacred hawk. With a further look you can then see the main courtyard to the smaller temples, with stories depicted through sculptures and the artwork on the walls. One such story is the birth of Ptolemy Philometor. Osiris’ story is also greatly depicted all over this smaller temple.

Besides this temple you must see the Nubian Monuments in Philae as well as the smaller Trajan’s Kiosk within the Temple of Philae. However, many of these sites had to be moved as, due to the construction of the dam, the island was constantly being flooded. Even though the structures were strengthened to a certain degree, the UNESCO stepped in to help have the site moved to avoid further damage. Many of these monuments are located in Agilkai which is only about 550 meters away.

From Philae you can also visit other nearby islands such as Beghé, which was formerly known as Snem and Senmut. It was another highly appreciated and valued island on the river Nile, and it has an amazingly beautiful waterfall called the First Cataract. There are various small memorials that were dedicated to Rameses the Great, Amenhotep and more, as well as other Roman and Macedonian rulers who reigned in Egypt. There are also ancient ruins of temples, including a propylon with two temple columns and what is left of some granite statues. However, these statues are believed to have been from a later period of time.

Philae is definitely well worth the visit. It is a beautiful and interesting island that still captures the essence of the Egyptians. And although much has been removed, the ancient aura of civilisation still lingers. It is scenically set in the middle of the river Nile so you have a panoramic view of everything around this island. You will have a splendid time visiting this ancient island as well as the surrounding islands if you have the chance.
