The city of Portimao is located in the Algarve region along the southern coast of Portugal. It is a small city with a population of only 45,000 people. Portimao was originally known as Vila Nova de Portimao but in 1924 it officially became the city of Portimao.
Portimao enjoys wonderful weather during the course of the year. The coldest month of the year is January. Those that choose to visit Portimao during this month can expect temperatures ranging from 48 to 59 degrees Fahrenheit. The hottest months of the year are July and August which will see temperatures ranging between 68 and 82 degrees Fahrenheit. A cool breeze coming off of the Atlantic makes the high temperatures, which can go as high as 105 degrees Fahrenheit, tolerable.
There are many days of sunshine in Portimao with the month of September only having an average of two rainy days each year. Do not be fooled by the average rainfall in Portimao because the rain that they typically experience is heavy but infrequent. Portimao experiences less than 20 days of rainfall each year. If you are headed to the beach in Portimao you will enjoy relatively warm waters but not as warm as areas that are surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea.
If you are a golfer, then Portimao is a place that you will want to visit. Because of the wonderful climate, golf has become a major sport in the area. Numerous golf courses can be found in the Portimao area that will provide some spectacular views of the area. Two of the main courses were designed by Sir Henry Cotton, the famed British designer.
For those looking to spend the day on the beach, head straight to the Praia Da Rocha that provides 2km of beach access that is remarkably beautiful. There are numerous bars and restaurants along the stretch of beach. Whether you are looking for a nice family restaurant or an action packed bar, Praia Da Rocha has something for everyone.
The beautiful beaches provide visitors with a number of water sport opportunities. There is parasailing, windsurfing, sailing, and deep sea fishing to keep you entertained during your stay in Portimao. A number of scuba diving and snorkelling adventures are also available as well.
There is a slide & splash located nearby that will provide plenty of fun for the whole family. This water park is one of the biggest in Europe and provides numerous different attractions. From waterslides called the plunge to laid back inter-tube slides, there is something that everyone will enjoy.
Night time is a fun time in Portimao as many of the restaurants and bars come alive at night. If you like to gamble, head to the beach where you will find a casino located conveniently on the beach for you. There are also a number of discos in the area where visitors can dance until the early morning. Try to head out to the beach and catch one of Portimao’s spectacular sunrises while you are there as well.
