Sydney has a population of over four million, making it the largest city in Australia. The city is known for hosting a number of major events, including sports events such as the 1938 British Games, the Summer Olympics in 2000 and the Rugby World Cup in 2003. Sydney’s oceanic climate brings warm summers, the highest temperature reached being 45.3°C. Winters are mild, with temperatures usually around 5°C. The city has many beaches to visit and the warm climate makes them a popular attraction amongst both locals and tourists. Sydney has many major tourist attractions. The most popular is the Sydney Opera House. Opened on the 20th October 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II, this magnificent building became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 and is comprised of five main performance areas. These include an opera theatre, concert hall, drama theatre, playhouse and studio. Many events are held there, so make sure you purchase a ticket and experience some of the best performances, in Sydney’s greatest attraction. Don’t forget that in the evening the view of the Sydney Opera House is spectacular.
Another great attraction is Sydney Harbour Bridge. Located near to the Opera House, the bridge was opened in 1932 and is a popular attraction amongst tourists. To properly experience this great structure, you may want to take part in BridgeClimb, where you can travel up the southern half of the bridge. You can either take a tour during the day or go in the evening, when you can see some truly spectacular views of the Sydney Opera House and the harbour.
For historical sights, visit Sydney’s shores, where you will find a selection of historic forts, such as Georges Head Battery, the Middle Head Fortifications and many more. Some of these forts date back to the 1800s and are quite impressive, so don’t forget to take a camera. The Rocks, another popular historic site, which is worth a visit, has many period buildings and themed pubs.
In addition to these great attractions, you will also find a selection of museums, including the Powerhouse Museum, the Australian Maritime Museum and the Australian Museum, which are all well worth a visit.
For more spectacular views of the city, visit Sydney Tower, which is Australia’s second tallest tower. Here you will find Sydney Tower Skywalk, where you can enjoy 360° panoramic views of the city. Another popular tourist destination is Fox Studios, where hit films such as Moulin Rouge, The Matrix and a few of the Star Wars films were made. In addition, there are a selection of nature parks and wildlife attractions, such as Centennial Park, The Royal Botanic Gardens and Sydney Wildlife World.
